Knife Information
1894- Mr. Tasaburo Shigematsu, a hardware wholesaler, introduced a new pocket knife with its blade and sheath folded by installing a small handle “Chikiri (tail)” on the blade, while inspired by the knife he brought back from Kagoshima.
He named it “Higonokami Knife” because many of his customers were in Kumamoto area (formally Higo country), which turned out to dramatically increase his sales. The blades have gradually changed their shapes. Unlike single-edged knives, the double-edged blades (V-shaped cross section) were in those days considered common. The earlier blades had a sharper tip (shape of a bamboo leaf), but now they have square shapes. The sheaths had a vertically folding style and a cross folding style, now the vertical one has to be custom made.
In 1911, at the First Kobe Export Articles Competitive Exhibition, Crown Prince (later Emperor Taisho) liked Higonokami on display very much and bought one, which is said to have helped its fame further spread.
The Higonikami is a fantastic traditional utility knife at a low cost.

Knife Information
A relatively young but masterful blacksmith, Shigeki Tanaka crafts his knives in a workshop in Miki City, Japan. Known for being skillful and creative, he works with almost all knifemaking steels, from high carbon like Aogami, to powder stainless steel. His range of R2/SG2 Black Damascus had our jaws on the floor when we received our first shipment from him!
The first thing we noted was the impeccable presentation. A Palownia wooden box houses all his R2 knives and is lined with red velvet. The etching of these blades has left a dark, misty, striking Damascus pattern, and are dressed in Walnut handles. Beautifully thin grinds ensure fantastic cutting performance, and 64HRC guarantees phenomenal edge retention
Best paired with a 22cm felt lined blade guard and a 1000/6000 whetstone

The brass color has a subdued hue and texture reminiscent of antique metal tableware, and it is hard to believe that it is pottery. Each time it is used, the color of the dish changes little by little due to oil and acid, making it a dish that truly grows. The color changes over time are also enjoyable.
